The Best of Friends

Today I had the privilege of interviewing a very lovely lady, my Grandmother’s best friend, Fay.
Fay and my Grandmother, Dorothy (Dot), met in 1941 when they were 16 and both started work in the offices of W.D. & H.O. Wills tobacco importers in Perth’s CBD.
The two of them became inseparable. Together they went to picnics, balls, concerts, family gatherings and even ‘sand-bagging’ parties as part of the war effort during WWII.
At the end of the war, the two of them went on a trip to Melbourne where Dot reunited with her future husband, just out of the Army – Fay was meant to be their chaperone!
Fay and Dot were bridesmaids at each other’s weddings and, together with their husbands, they built homes on blocks next door to each other in Mt Pleasant in 1952.
They then lived as neighbours for over 50 years, raising their families side-by-side and sharing all life’s milestones until Dorothy sadly passed away from cancer in 2003.
Fay said she still misses having her best friend Dot living next door…
What an incredible friendship they forged all those years ago!
Thank you Fay for sharing your stories and photos of two gorgeous young girls who were the best of friends.
